Geotechnical Group: March 2009 Update E-mail
Written by the Geotech Group

March Meeting

Following the May 12, 2008, Sichuan Earthquake (also known as the Wenchuan Earthquake), a series of reconnaissance activities were undertaken by both Chinese as well as international teams, including several from the US in the months following the event. This presentation provides an overview of the primary geotechnical observations from these activities. In particular, the presentation summarizes key observations in terms of surface faults, landslides and other mass material movements, and their effects on civil infrastructure. The potential role for greater use of remote sensing technologies in future reconnaissance studies is highlighted, particularly where ground access is limited for safety reasons. Lessons learned from the event in terms of both infrastructure protection as well as event response are discussed. Strategies to mitigate losses in future events are identified.
